Risks of Obesity Cited as #1 Health Issue in 2020

Obesity states U.S. National Institute of Health (NIH). Today, ninety-six million Americans are considered obese. But, what can be done to reverse the trend?

Try a low glycemic diet that is rich in whole grains and low in refined sugars

  • Exercise regularly and for sustained periods of time
  • Get enough sleep (studies show that adult dieters who get less than eight hours of sleep per night lose less weight than those who get eight hours or more)
  • Drink water - at least eight glasses per day
The trend is not absolute and can be altered dramatically. There are factors that contribute to obesity.
        1. Genetics 2. Environment

        3. Our Behaviors

What are some of the negative impacts of obesity?
        • Diabetes. A large majority of diabetics have acquired the disease directly because of their obesity. They are now chained to a life of taking pills, or even worse, taking insulin shots. Diabetes leads to all sorts of other health complications, as well.
        • Heart attack. People who are obese are at a significantly higher risk of having a heart attack. This fact is proven over and over again. Sudden cardiac arrest is a fairly common cause of death for someone who is obese.
        • Cancer. Obesity also increases the chance of acquiring a number of cancers. Yes, it is true. Although this connection wasn't clear for years, it is crystal clear now.
        • Joint problems. Obesity also leads to joint problems. Excess weight puts significant stress on each joint, even with the simplest of activities. Many obesity sufferers have knee problems for this very reason.
        • Sleep apnea. Respiratory problems are quite common, as well. The most common is sleep apnea. People who are diagnosed with this have a very difficult time breathing while they sleep. This makes them more tired during the day.
A recent study published by the Center for Disease Control (CDC) states that the combined direct and indirect health care costs resulting from obese and overweight Americans is estimated to be $117 billion per year. Statistics also demonstrate that death rates increase at least 200% for people who are 50 pounds or more overweight. The National Institute of Health (NIH) has stated that an increase of 20% beyond ideal body weight is the point at which excess weight becomes a health risk. There are many diseases which often follow obesity such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes, sleep apnea, respiratory problems, bone and joint problems, coronary artery disease, stroke, some cancers, and many others. Each of these independently can have serious consequences to ones health. The medical risks of diabetes are indeed profound.

Air Ozone Purifiers: Are They Good or Bad?

Ozone is like the sun. Without ozone you would die. Yet too much can affect your health. So when air purifier companies try to sell you that ozone air purifiers are death machines or healthy air miracles the truth is somewhere in the middle.

        How The Controversy Started

A year ago Consumer Reports claimed the Sharper Images Ionic Breeze air purifier emitted 150 to 300 parts per billion of ozone in samples taken 2 inches from the machine. This report led to the highly successful Ionic Breeze infomercials being pulled from TV. The Breeze image ionic Sharper Brand died, replaced by the Oreck air purifiers with overpriced infomercial units.

( Sharper Images Breeze Ionic Midi, breeze ionic plus professional, and breeze ionic quadra review models no longer have an Ozone problem. )

Lets look at both the good and the bad about Ozone in Air Purifiers:

        Ozone is Good

You would die if there was no ozone.
Ozone is simply oxygen with an added molecule.
It is natures own air cleaner.
Ozone is produced by nature and cleans the air.
At low levels, as found in nature, it does a superb job of cleaning the air.
Some purifiers allow for on/off Ozone, allowing you to treat the room
All electric motors, and computers, produce Ozone

        and Ozone is Bad

The EPA standard for ozone exposure is 80 parts per billion over 8 hours.
Ozone levels over 100 parts per billion can causes injury to the airways
High Ozone warnings signal that the air is bad.
High levels can irritate lung tissue
Even air purifiers that claim no ozone produce ozone if they have a fan.

Conclusion: When used properly ozone is very helpful at treating odor, mildew and mold. In 1985, even though I was an asthmatic, I used an ozone purifier. It helped my sleep by treating a mold and mildew problem in my bedroom.

For Asthmatics: Many people with asthma or lung problems consider avoiding ozone. If you like ozone for ocassional rom treatment (as I do) find a unit with low levels, timed, and dont sleep too close to it. You may also want to treat the room and leave the room empty for 3-6 hours. The ozone will fade in that time.

So Do You Want It In Your Purifier?

My advice is to find a unit that offers optional, timed ozone when you need or want it.

I now own an air purifier with optional on/off ozone that has a 2 hour ozone timer. I use it maybe 1 or 2 days a week when any room in my house gets musty smelling, and in the bathroom when it smells moldy, or mildewy . It freshens the room better than anything.

I hope I have cleared the air on the great ozone conspiracy.

Choosing The Right Carport Construction For Your Home

Buying a carport to protect your expensive automobile can be very confusing. Whilst you can mix and match construction methods, in the main you have basically three main choices for your permanent carport construction:

        1. Prefabricated galvanised steel carports;
        2. Custom made timber carports; and
        3. Custom brick or stone carports.

        Prefabricated galvanised steel carports

Galvanized steel carports will have a zinc finish which protects the carport frame and roof from corrosive elements, such as water and salt. This will in turn generally diminish the possibility of rust. The thicker gauge of the carport metal, the greater the protection from various natural hazards for your automobile.

Depending on your local planning regulations, some areas may allow home owner/occupiers to construct their own carports. This can be a very rewarding experience, but it is not for the uninitiated. If you think that you don't have the necessary skills to construct a pre-fabricated carport yourself - your are probably right; so its often a good investment to pay a professional to do it for you. Many prefabricated carport vendors offer installation with the sale, and this makes a lot of sense because if something goes wrong, the problems are squarely in their court.

The upside of this method of carport construction is speed and cost, but they can look a little out of place and a bit cheap if not done well. They can be painted if prepared properly to match the colour scheme of your house.

        Custom made timber carports

Timber carports can look fantastic. Turned posts and fancy facades can add a lot of style to your carport project. Unless you are skilled in construction, and your local planning regulations allow, you will probably need to engage a professional to construct your timber carport. There are many free designs available, or you can engage a draftsman or architect to design a carport to suit your house. This type of carport construction can be flat roofed with metal; or pitched roof with metal, tiles, shingles or a whole myriad of construction materials. Painting and roof construction can be easily matched to blend in with your existing house.

        Custom brick or stone carports

The top of the tree definitely is the carport constructed with brick or stone piers. Definitely a job for the qualified tradesman, if you can afford this construction style you may as well go the whole hog on roof finish as well. Looks and price differentiate this style of carport construction form the others, but be careful your home may actually be suited to one of the other styles - so get that second opinion!

Before attempting to build your own carport we strongly recommend that you consult a building professional. Its easy to make a mistake and construction mistakes can be costly and time-consuming. That big quote may not look as expensive after all if you consider the risks of carport construction DIY.
